This fantastic resource provides the best of the History Portfolio series adapted for younger children.  The cover indicates that it is suited for little ones ages 5 - 7, but we’ve used it successfully in our family with slightly older “reluctant writers.”  I also believe that many 4 year olds would thoroughly enjoy this book. Since the book is bound in a 3-ring binder format with a slip-in cover, we simply removed the covers before passing out the books, then let the children decorate their own covers.  After all, it isn’t very pleasant to be working in a book for “5-7 year olds” if you are older!

Unlike the regular History Portfolio books which require a separate teacher’s manual, the Jr. volume has the manual included in the back.  There are suggested activities for every single box in the book, including suggested copywork.  In many cases, there are several levels of suggested activities which will allow you to select the activity most appropriate for each child.  There are even mini lapbooks which can be assembled and glued right into the book!

If you are studying ancient history with little ones, then I highly suggest that you allow them to work through this volume.  It will give them an organized place for their work and will result in a gorgeous keepsake volume.  Because the book is in binder format, it is a simple matter to include other treasures such as coloring pages, drawings, or pages from other notebooking resources such as Hold That Thought or History Pockets.

The set of full-color maps is an excellent resource because it will give your children full-color, completed maps to work from.  With enough searching, you may be able to find the answers to the mapwork yourself, but it is far easier to have the set of completed maps right at your fingertips.  The maps are sold separately or can be purchased bundled with the book at a discounted price.  You will only need one set of colored maps per family.
