As a busy mom, I really appreciate toys that are both fun and practical. The My First ABC Book definitely fits the bill - in fact, we've owned one of these for years and loved it! This sturdy wooden book (wooden = nearly indestructible!) has a picture for each letter of the alphabet, and a little rhyming sentence featuring the item pictured. Each little picture is actually a wooden puzzle piece. The puzzle pieces are magnetic, which means they won't fall out when your child drops the book, turns the pages, or flips the book upside down. The hole for each piece is printed with the picture of the piece to reduce frustration. So, what can you do with this book? You can read it to your child. You can use it as a primer to teach the letters of the alphabet. You can use it as a puzzle. You can use the puzzle pieces as manipulatives - "Can you find the picture that starts with the 't' sound?" "Can you give find a picture of something you can eat?" "Look at this piece. Do you know what sound this animal makes?" Look at this piece. What letter does this start with?" "Can you take all of these pieces and line them up in ABC order?" Because the pieces are magnetic, you can use them on your fridge when using them as manipulatives and you can combine them with magnetic fridge letters for more learning fun. I don't recommend leaving them on the fridge because (at least in my house) they may get taken off and lost, but they are a great short term fridge activity that may just keep your wee one happy while you are cooking dinner! This is a beautiful, heirloom quality product that your children (and maybe your grandchildren) are sure to enjoy!
