This pocket book is somewhat unique in that each pocket is for a specific piece of children's literature, all of which, of course, are Caldecott Winners. Two of them are also featured in Five in a Row (FIAR). Several others are top favorite books of ours!

Each pocket contains interesting information about the illustrator, other books he wrote and/or illustrated, and other awards he has won. There are also several very interesting projects for each book, including art projects that relate to the book and it's art and several other very interesting and worthwhile projects relating to the content of the book. These projects are really exceptional and will definitely enhance your child's enjoyment of each book while also increasing comprehension and understanding.
This book would make a fabulous study of great kid's literature! It is definitely worth adding into your FIAR studies or could stand alone. It would be wonderful to buy or check out one of these books each week and incorporate the activities into your schedule. Another practical use for this book would be to use the units as they fit into your regular homeschool schedule: Saint George and the Dragon when studying the Middle Ages, Snowflake Bentley when studying weather, photography, etc., Lon Po Po when studying China, and so on.
As with many of the Pockets books, I believe that the materials in here are well-suited for children younger than grades 4-6. These are all picture books, not chapter books, but are books that children of all ages will truly cherish. In fact, I strongly recommend getting both volumes to use together. I know that you and your children both will love snuggling up together to enjoy these terrific books, then doing the highly enjoyable projects together.
